A senior delegation from the Republic of Uzbekistan, chaired by First Deputy Prime Minister Rustam S. Azimov, conducted broad and intensive consultations with the government of the United States in Washington, DC, November 26-30, 2001. The talks focused primarily on financial and economic issues.

The United States reaffirmed its deep appreciation to the Republic of Uzbekistan for its historic decision to broadly support the international coalition against terrorism. Both countries expressed commitment to their qualitatively new, long-term relationship based on their common objectives to combat international terrorism; eradicate social, economic, and financial sources of extremism; and maintain peace and stability and strengthen security in Central Asia.

The Republic of Uzbekistan pledged to accelerate its program of reforms to achieve economic liberalization and a market economy, including current account convertibility. Recognizing the financial and economic impact of the downturn in the global economy, the United States committed to expand its broad cooperation and assistance to support these goals.
